If you are pre-med or in medical school, learn Anki. There is no serious debate about this in those communities.
Language learning. Anki is similarly dominant in serious language learning communities. For acquiring vocabulary in Japanese, Arabic, Mandarin, or any language requiring thousands of lexical items, spaced repetition is the most efficient method, and Anki implements it better than Quizlet.
Customization. Anki’s card templates allow you to create cards with exactly the information you need on the front and back, formatted however makes sense for the content. You can embed images, audio, code blocks, and LaTeX math. For subjects like pharmacology, anatomy, or chemistry, being able to include a molecule diagram on the card is a significant advantage.
Free on desktop. Anki’s desktop app (Windows, Mac, Linux) is free and open-source. If you study primarily on a computer, cost is not a factor.
